How Tooth Whitening Works

Here at Northside Family Dental, we want to help you take care of your smile. Our team understands that the way your teeth look can have a serious impact on your overall self-confidence, and we want to give you a smile that you can be proud to show off to the world. If you have been considering tooth whitening but have not yet taken the final step to make an appointment, we encourage you to read the rest of this article to find out more about the process and how it works in order to know for sure whether this step is right for you.

At its core, tooth whitening is a fairly simple process. Tooth whitening products, including over-the-counter whitening toothpastes and the professional-grade products that we use here, all contain one of two bleaching agents: hydrogen peroxide or carbamide peroxide. When applied to the teeth, these bleaches react with the compounds in the stains or discolored spots on the surface and break those stains into smaller pieces. This makes the discoloration appear less noticeable and lightens the appearance of the teeth overall.

Tooth whitening is an effective way to reduce discoloration on the teeth, but unfortunately it is not equally effective against all types of stains. Yellow stains tend to respond well to tooth whitening treatments, but brown stains are generally harder to lift, and teeth that have gone gray may not respond at all. Regardless of your particular situation, our team can help you improve the appearance of your teeth so that you can show your smile off without self-consciousness.
