The Purpose of Crowns & BridgesDental crowns & bridges are techniques for resolving the problem of damaged and/or missing teeth. There are a number of purposes for crowns, and there are various types of materials that can be used for crowns & bridges.

Typically, crowns are used to entirely cover a damaged tooth, but they can also be used to cover a dental implant, cover a tooth that has had a root canal, or serve as the anchors for a bridge. Porcelain or ceramic crowns can be constructed to carefully match the color of your teeth so they look completely natural. Alternatively, they can be made of materials such as gold and metal alloys. Alloys may not be as cosmetically pleasing as porcelain or ceramic, but they are stronger, and thus are a good option for back teeth.  There are also all-resin options that are less expensive, but do not last as long as other materials. A temporary crown can be used while a permanent crown is being constructed.

A bridge is used to span a gap where there are missing teeth. The bridge is either attached to the natural teeth on each side or to implants. Since both crowns & bridges can be made to match the color of your teeth, they are a natural-looking option. The use of crowns & bridges can restore your beautiful smile if you have lost teeth or have damaged ones that you want to save. Dr. Laga can go over the options with you and explain the process in detail.
