Dealing with Dentures: 4 Tips for Helping Them Last

A good pair of dentures can be life changing. When your dentures fit right, you can find yourself enjoying foods you haven’t been able to eat for a long time. At Northside Family Dental, we understand that your dentures are an investment that you will want to last as long as possible. Should you be in need of denture repairs, our caring staff and expert dentist can provide you with the solutions you need. However, there are also steps that can be taken to increase the longevity of your dentures and avoid the need for repair:

  1. Prepare before cleaning: A common cause for dentures breaking is when they are dropped in the sink. Make sure you have a firm grip on your dentures when handling them and place a towel on top of the surface under your dentures to soften the blow if they drop.
  2. Remove them with both hands: Pulling your dentures out on one side can create greater wear in certain areas, which leads to improper fitting and other problems. To avoid this, use both hands when removing your dentures.
  3. Rinsing and soaking: Clean dentures will last much longer. Rinse them carefully after eating and soaking them in a special solution at night will prevent dentures from becoming dry or cracked. It will also help keep your gums healthy and prevent infection.
  4. Monitor what you chew: Many people have seemingly harmless habits of chewing on pencils or crunching on ice, but this can be damaging if you have dentures. Avoid chewing on hard items to better preserve your dentures.
